July 28, 2011 Honeybrook Junior Member Competes at Pinehurst

“It’s pretty cool. Last year I lost by two strokes and I had two penalty strokes,” said Wren.
Added Mitchell, a recent winner of the Father-Son Younger Junior-Junior Division, “It’s an honor to play in a tournament honoring Francis Hussey. I read a little bit about the history of this tournament and it’s a sad story.”
Wren, 13, of Morgantown, Pa. and Mitchell, 13, of Wilmington, Del. are typically competitors and not teammates.
The two know each other from U.S. Kids Golf and Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour events.
“It’s great to team up with a great player and friend,” said Mitchell.
A total of 42 teams competed in the Hussey, named in honor of the former Rolling Green GC junior member.
Francis suffered with congenital heart disease and passed away in December of 1983 while undergoing major heart surgery. He was 13 years old when he died. Francis was a student in the Haverford Township School system, an avid sports fan and an active junior member at Rolling Green. His courage in the face of his illness was a great inspiration to all who knew him.

Rehoboth Beach Junior Open (Rehoboth Beach CC) and the Phila PGA Jr Tour (Cripple Creek CC, Kings Creek CC and the Peninsula Club) last week.  R.J. won 2 of the 4 tournaments, including shooting a round of 1 under par at Kings Creek Country Club...he won the overall series, which was sponsored by SkyCaddie, and won a new SkyCaddie SGX (which he gave to dear ol dad for fathers day ;-)

So far this summer he has 5 tour wins in 8 tries and is currently ranked first in the Phila PGA section Player of the Year standings.

DesertShootout RJ_and_cactus

2/23/11 - R.J. finished 17th in the 12 year old division in the Desert Shootout in Phoeniz, AZ.  296 of the top kids from around the world competed...the kids from the west and south really dominated.  RJ played against kids from England, Mexico, Canada and Iceland.  He did really well as he was the top finisher from a cold weather area.  He said he couldn't have done it without the help of his ace Honeybrook Looper, Matt "Matty the Caddy Seuffert.

The A.W. Tillinghast designed Galen Hall Golf Club welcomed 60 junior golfers to the Par 72/73, 6,271/5,869/5,464 yards long golf course. Temperatures in the upper 50’s along with breezy winds on top of small and fast greens made scoring difficult.

In the 9 Hole Division (Boys & Girls 10-12) Russell “R.J.” Wren (Morgantown, PA Honeybrook GC) earned his 2nd victory in as many tournaments on tour with a 47 (+10). 3 shots off Wren’s pace was Franca Hurtado (Macungie, PA) with a front nine score of a 50 (+13) which bettered Christian Ritondo (Newtown, PA) by 2 shots.
Philadelphia
Section PGA Junior Tour

RJMiddletownThe Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour kicked off the 2010 season at Middletown Country Club (Langhorne, PA) on Saturday, April 3rd. The par 69 ~ 6,123 / 5,860 / 5,175 yards long golf course welcomed 76 junior golfers from the Tri-State area who were delighted to see highs in the mid 70’s and all of the snow melted from the winter.

In the 9 Hole Division (Boys & Girls 10-12), Russell “R.J.” Wren (Morgantown, PA, Honeybrook GC) posted the low front nine score of a 42 (+7) to record his first ever win in the 9 Hole Division. The key to Wren’s 1st place title was steady play and staying away from double bogeys. 2 shots off the pace of Wren and finishing in 2nd place was Franca Hurtado (Macungie, PA). Rounding out the top 3 was Luca Jezzeny (Furlong, PA, Lookaway CC) with a score of 45 (+10).
